The new 67-footer from Marcelo Penna Yacht Design is the best representation of both sailing worlds.
The project has been called MP670S and she is a complete bespoke masterpiece which can suit both the most demanding racing skippers as well as families seeking comfort and cosiness. The first unit is under construction at the renowned shipyard Longitud Cero, winner of the last five world championships of TP52, and the last two Sydney Hobart in compensated time (Ichi Ban). Both structures and systems have been approved by Registro Italiano Navale (RINA) and have CE certificate for category A.
This yacht offers the opportunity to sail in comfort and to take part in top-level races without the need of hiring expensive crew, as the MP670S has been designed after having sailed many miles and having passed too many buoys. All sails controls are for ease of handing so that the huge sail area/ displacement ratio does not become a problem.
She can be configured as a high-performance cruiser-racer or as a racing yacht. The former is equipped with a pinhead mainsail in combination with a low draft keel and the latter has a square-top mainsail with a high draft keel. The mast is made in carbon fibre as well as the retractable bowsprit. The sailing equipment has been configured in collaboration with North Sails, seeking the most efficient and competitive sail distribution.
The structures have been designed in order to maximize both performance and safety whereas weight is kept as low as possible. She has been built following sandwich technique under vacuum infusion and post-cured in an oven to ensure the best bond between skins and core. The materials used are Glass, Kevlar and Carbon fibers in combination with Epoxy resin and polyurethane post-cured foam.
The deck layout is simple and elegant, mainsail’s lines are hidden. When needed, a table can be mounted easily in the centre of the cockpit in the racing version.
The MP670S offers many interior layouts and all of them are characterised by its modernity and cleanliness, although here only one is presented. The interior design has been carefully chosen: joinery is made from dark mahogany or white oak, marble tops in bathrooms and granite top in the galley, all them with honeycomb core.
When accessing the salon from the cockpit, one realises the amount of natural light that this place has where the owner and beloved ones will gather to enjoy conversations or a good meal. The galley is in the starboard part of the salon but all the equipment is hidden so the salon seems to be even bigger, also improving the shifting of heavy sails. Moving forward, there are two comfortable cabins for guests. At the end of the corridor we can find the magnificent owners’ area which is configured as a large self-contained suite with a beautiful shower. The whole yacht is equipped with many windows providing remarkable interior brightness.
When moving aft, we will find a multipurpose space, unique in a sailing yacht of this dimension. This environment can be a chill-out area where one can snuggle between cushions, read a book, play table games, watch a movie, take a nap or enclose the little ones. The idea was to offer a sailing yacht suiting the needs of every member of the family. The most important thing is that
this space can be suddenly stored onshore and four bunk beds can be easily mounted to host crew and take part in offshore regattas.
What about the engine room? Well, the engine is located below the companionway ladder while all the systems are in a technical room between the multipurpose space and the garage, creating a bigger space to work with easier access to pumps and systems. The garage located aft can accommodate a tender up to 2.7 meters.
The sail locker is also used as a crew cabin with access from deck through a hatch.
The designers and engineers have paid great attention to obtain a well-balanced yacht; with the correct rudder and keel blade to ensure both performance and safety. On one hand, the configuration with reduced sail area and lower draft, the keel blade has an elliptical shape that ensures enough lift at lower speeds. On the other hand, in the configuration with square-top mainsail and deeper draft the high aspect ratio keel guarantees performance in every condition. Both keels’ blades are ended with a torpedo bulb-shape to lower the centre of gravity. All the appendages have been decided after an extensive hydrodynamic research in order to minimize resistance.
To sum up, the MP670S is a unique sailing yacht with great potential both in races and in comfortable relaxing cruises, always with a full cruising interior design, intended for those Owners who want to enjoy summer cruises with the family while taking part in important season events with the same yacht and not losing its essence.
